The term banh mi was added to the Oxford English Dictionary last month. The French-influenced, Vietnamese sub is an inexpensive and addictive favourite the world over.
Trung Nguyen in Chinatown’s Far East Shopping Centre has a loyal following because of its unusual sub fillings and ridiculously friendly owners. Ever so chipper, they tend to [...]
I got an email a few weeks ago from the manager of Fire Kirin in the Avenida Mall inviting me to try a tasting menu. In return, they wanted my honest feedback. A fair deal, I figured, so southward we went. (I keep forgetting how close this is to Southcentre Mall, but I digress.)

UPDATE – December 2010: Kol3 took their subs and shu mai balls off the menu because they weren’t selling enough to ensure they were fresh all the time. Sadness. However, they have added a basa banh xeo. They also make a really good sate pho noodle soup. Banh xeo portions have also gotten much bigger [...]

Two Buddhas, the Neptune of this ship, stare from the counter.
My sister [...]
Hotel front desk operator: “Hello, how may I help you?”

Him: “I’m sorry?”
Me: “Sliding Doors. The restaurant?”
Him: “Oh…. I think Sliding Doors is a movie with Gwyneth Paltrow. Do you mean Slanted Door?”
Me: “Oh right. Uh, yes, please.”
I had [...]
So it’s taken us more than a year to find good Vietnamese bun, or vermicelli bowl, in Calgary but we finally got some at Pho Anh Huyen, thanks to Alison and Luke. They go there every Wednesday night, so you know it’s consistent.
Like most great Vietnamese joints, Pho Anh Huyen doesn’t look like much [...]
