My most pleasurable restaurant finds are ones that look like nothing on the outside (a hole-in-the-wall, if you will) but serve the most delicious food.
Baba Ka Dhaba most certainly falls into that category. Our friends Amit and Michelle, who discovered this strip-mall corner eatery, tried to set the scene well beforehand.
“Don’t wear anything new/nice/expensive,” Amit [...]
This month, I started a weekly column on CBC Radio’s afternoon show, The Homestretch. The focus is on hidden gems and holes-in-the-walls in Calgary. Tune into FM99.1 or AM1010 or live online every Wednesday at 5:20 p.m.
Listen to the Tiffin review.
This is my Calgary-style tiffin. A tiffin is basically made up of metal, flat-bottomed bowls [...]
It’s been a busy couple of weeks, so I’ll just throw something quick on here. Just like stopping at Tandoori Hut in Kensington and grabbing a take-out container of their lunch buffet.
You can fill the Styrofoam container with as much food as you want for $9. Don’t feel bad, because you can also get [...]
Sometimes I just don’t feel like cooking. OK, more like every Friday. And maybe Thursday. And Wednesday once in a while.
I also hate wasting money eating out in mediocre restaurants. That’s why I like dropping by Mirchi, a wonderful little place downtown recommended by Chowhounder John Manzo.
Opened by a young fellow less than a [...]
I couldn’t quite figure out Mango Shiva’s funny name, but now that I’ve eaten there it makes sense. Mangos are tasty. Shiva is the Hindu god who destroys evil and protects good. Therefore, Mango Shiva is tasty and good.
The four of us came for the downtown dining promotion (3 courses for $25) but the [...]
It’s hard to squeeze in a decent lunch even on a full hour break. By the time you get to a restaurant, sit down and order, there goes 15 minutes. Then you wolf down your meal, throw down some cash, and run back to the office. Enough to ruin any good meal.
That’s why the Indian [...]
Okay vegetarians you win. I will admit there is something tasty out there that doesn’t involve meat.
I ordered the meat combo ($15.95) at Little India, served tableside on a sizzling platter. It was tasty and more than ample: tandoori chicken, reshmi kebob, lamb tikka, prawn, lamb rogan josh, vegetable curry, rice and naan bread.
But [...]
Fredericton, while abundant in good people and beautiful homes, could not boast the same about its restaurants. That’s slowly changing and finally the city has its first Indian/Pakistani restaurant.
A couple from Montreal ran Chez Riz there for 15 years. But Rizwan-Ul-Haq and Faiza Mushtaq moved to Fredericton after local clients they catered for begged [...]
