#visaeveryday 2: Grounds for Appeal Indian curry

(This is a sponsored post.)

Day 2 of using my VISA for daily buys to see how my cash-back rewards add up. According to today’s purchases, I’m all about food (duh) and mundane errands squeezed in before work. I cut new keys ($11.76), bought some shoelaces ($5.59) and got an impromptu boot shine ($9.52).

As usual, [...]

CALGARY: Rasoi Indian Kitchen

Cross-posted from Metro Calgary:

Rasoi, which means kitchen in Hindi, does a masterful job of modernizing Indian favourites in a stylishly muted dining room.

Samosas ($7) were filled with garam masala beef and lightly deep-fried. Only the elegant presentation prevented me from licking the coriander and tamarind chutneys from the plate.

Stuffed with pieces of slow-braised masala [...]

CALGARY: La Casita Mexicana

I was intrigued by a restaurant that served both Indian and Mexican food after John Manzo posted about La Casita Mexicana on Chowhound. I was further convinced to try it when Dealfind posted a coupon for the restaurant.

La Casita Mexicana has been halved out of an Indian restaurant called Wicked Chili on 17th Avenue [...]

CALGARY: Southern Spice dosas

Friends who have lived in southern India will not stop obsessing about dosas, crispy crepes that are common breakfast and dinner fare in that part of the world.

Dosa batter is made from ground fermented rice and lentils so it’s safe for people with gluten or wheat allergies, and dosas are typically vegetarian.

I didn’t [...]

CALGARY: Safari Grill (Short Pants Plaza, part 3)

Safari Grill is the only sit-down restaurant in Short Pants Plaza. Decked out in earth tones, zebra print and Bollywood videos on the flat-screen, it’s a comfortable space for sharing east African and east Indian food. On the night we were there, two boys kept re-enacting their favourite dives from the World Cup while their [...]

CALGARY: TakeTomi Village (Hakka Indian Chinese)

Indian Chinese food can be a perplexing cuisine. At its heart, it’s the adaptation of Chinese food for Indian tastes in big cities like Calcutta, Mumbai and Bangalore. But many popular dishes don’t resemble anything like traditional Chinese food.

Then there’s the confusion over the label Hakka Chinese, which this cuisine is sometimes called. Traditional Hakka [...]

CALGARY: Canada Dosa Corner

Every owner of a small independent restaurant in Calgary has a story. Their personal tales only make the food they pour their heart and soul into even more unique and special.

Amit who is always on the hunt for new, great places to eat, insisted I had to write about Canada Dosa Corner, not only [...]

CALGARY: Baba Ka Dhaba

My most pleasurable restaurant finds are ones that look like nothing on the outside (a hole-in-the-wall, if you will) but serve the most delicious food.

Baba Ka Dhaba most certainly falls into that category. Our friends Amit and Michelle, who discovered this strip-mall corner eatery, tried to set the scene well beforehand.

“Don’t wear anything new/nice/expensive,” Amit [...]
