CALGARY: Spoon Me

With Calgary now thawing out, it’s a good time to try the frozen yogurt at Spoon Me in Kensington.

The concept is simple. Choose from three base yogurt flavours of natural (like vanilla), green tea, or acai (a slightly tart berry flavour) and then from any of their 26 toppings. There’s a nice selection of [...]

CALGARY: Farewell, Robbie Stewarts

Yes, that is how we were served a deep-fried Mars bar dessert from Robbie Stewarts Sports Pub in Kensington.

I have no words, so enjoy the picture.

Located on the ill-fated corner of Memorial Drive and 10th Street S.W., Robbie Stewarts and its Scottish pub grub closed this month after less than a year of operation.

ST. ANDREWS: I do, let’s eat!

Some people make special requests for wedding photos with a favourite relative, or against a certain backdrop; we asked our wedding photographer to snap pics of the food.

All of the photos in this post were taken by the fabulously talented Heather Wilkinson of Lucid Imaging.

If you need to hire a wedding or portrait [...]

CALGARY: Bliss cupcakes

Most people in Calgary are familiar with ultra-successful Crave Cupcakes and their lovely palm-sized, icing-topped offerings. The little bakery opened by sisters five years ago now has three locations, and more often than not, lineups out the door.

Now, there’s a new kid on the block (btw, weren’t they a great band?). Bliss & Co. Cupcakes [...]

HONG KONG: Pop bites and Post-it notes

There are lots of notable things about pop bites, a combination wine bar, bakery, deli and dessert cafe. (It’s owned by the same company that runs Shui Hu Ju, several blocks away.)

I felt my cool quotient rise just by stepping inside. A DJ was spinning tunes (isn’t that what the kids call it?) in [...]

HONG KONG: Doin’ the durian

There are two main gustatory reasons people visit Sai Kung: one is the seafood, and the other is the original location of Honeymoon Dessert (滿記甜品).

Opened in 1995, the dessert house has multiplied across Hong Kong and into China with more than 20 locations and still growing.

Now, anyone who knows me knows I loathe [...]

RICHMOND: Creamy, puffy, yummy

I love Beard Papa: great name, great logo, great product. That’s probably why there are 300 outlets around the world since the first one opened in Osaka, Japan in 1999. The only two Canadian stores are in Vancouver and Richmond, B.C.

Beard Papa makes cream puffs… amazing, delicious, addictive cream puffs with all-natural ingredients.

The basic [...]

OTTAWA: Beauty and the couscous

There’s a specific reason I wanted to visit Ottawa this time and here she is. Little Bella Gracia — beauty and grace in the making — is the product of Shawna and Aires Inc. She’s pretty darn sharp, hilarious and super well-dressed. All that at only 14 months old. Watch out, world!

Every time I see [...]
