CALGARY: European Bakery and Deli

European Bakery and Deli is easy to miss, tucked into an apartment building on 17th Avenue S.W. I forgot to take a photo of the exterior but here’s one posted to Urbanspoon.

I stumbled upon it a few years ago when I interviewed owner Shaqir Duraj for my day job. He graciously performed for the [...]

CALGARY: Baguette showdown

After a waffle breakfast, I had to grab something to go for lunch and somehow Gwendolyn (she’s an enabler) convinced me to get two baguettes for “research.”

Ever the enablee, I chose a baguette with chicken ($8) from Manuel Latruwe, and a Perigord baguette ($10) with duck rillettes from L’Epicerie right next door.

The Latruwe baguette [...]

CALGARY: Sunterra Market

Condo dwellers of the Victoria Park area can now rejoice with their very own supermarket. Granted, it’s not a discount grocer, but the Sunterra Market (in the shiny Keynote tower) has its advantages especially for young professionals who live and work in the area.

As Calgary’s closest answer to Whole Foods, Sunterra Market stocks organic [...]

CALGARY: Spolumbo’s

I may be a small, Asian woman, but I often have the appetite of a large football player. So Spolumbo’s pork cutlet on a kaiser ($8.50) is right up my alley.

Spolumbo’s was started by three former Calgary Stampeder players. They know how to feed people. The Inglewood deli is always busy, and they do [...]

CALGARY: Shawarma addiction

The cranky-on-the-outside/sweet-on-the-inside technicians at work always know the best, cheap places to eat. That’s how I found Jimmy’s A&A Deli in the northeast northwest. Some guys call it Jimmy’s; others call it A&A; I call it frickin’ addictive and awesome.

It looks like any other corner convenience store on the outside but inside is a Middle [...]

CALGARY: Aller à l’épicerie

I went to high school in English Canada, where most of my French classes involved sitting through audio tapes where Pierre and Marie would discuss mundane tasks with great animation and perfect elocution.

“Vas-tu à la fête?”
“No, je vais étudier à la bibliothèque!”

(Although in Grade 12, there was bizarre scenario in our textbooks about a [...]

MACAU: Portuguese tarts

I think Portugal’s sweetest contribution to China are its custard tarts.

In Chinese cuisine, there are the bright yellow egg tarts (蛋撻), which are said to be influenced by Britain, and then there are Portuguese tarts (葡撻), which are made with a bit of coconut milk and have a brown caramelized top.

The Portuguese tarts [...]

CALGARY: Italian break at Lina’s

Lina’s Italian Market is a great place to shop for Italian groceries, deli meats, cheese, sausages, herbs, and cool imported kitchen gadgets.

But the cafe area in the front is a delicious and economical place to stop too for a quick bite. Pick from a line of fresh, dinner-plate size pizzas and rows of panini, [...]
