I got an email a few weeks ago from the manager of Fire Kirin in the Avenida Mall inviting me to try a tasting menu. In return, they wanted my honest feedback. A fair deal, I figured, so southward we went. (I keep forgetting how close this is to Southcentre Mall, but I digress.) Named after [...] Leo Fu’s has been selling ginger beef for decades in a weird little strip mall near Chinook Centre. But believe it or not, I was enticed to the Chinese restaurant by the chicken wings. You won’t find the Szechuan-style wings ($9.95) anywhere else. They’re plump and crispy, and covered in a sticky sweet and spicy [...] Beef noodles are a humble and popular Asian dish. At first glance it’s a simple bowl of broth, noodles and stewed beef, but the quality of each is what sets amazing beef noodles apart from the rest. Chef Hung Beef Noodle has lots of locations in Taiwan, with its first restaurant in Canada at Aberdeen Centre [...] Indian Chinese food can be a perplexing cuisine. At its heart, it’s the adaptation of Chinese food for Indian tastes in big cities like Calcutta, Mumbai and Bangalore. But many popular dishes don’t resemble anything like traditional Chinese food. Then there’s the confusion over the label Hakka Chinese, which this cuisine is sometimes called. Decorated with pink and gold wallpaper and red lanterns, it’s kind of hard to tell what kind of Asian cuisine it serves. Beans, jellies, cooked fruit in hot soup… BLEEEACH. Nonetheless, I was willing to accompany my sister and a couple of good friends to a Chinese dessert house in Markham. Hung Fook Tong is a Hong Kong company that manufactures bottled herbal drinks and packaged desserts.
