CALGARY: Cheese gift

As you can imagine, I’ve been very lucky to receive some great baby gifts with a food theme, as well as a homemade lasagna. But I was blown away when a delivery man came to our door this week with a sack full of cheese!

It was a baby present from supermom and fellow blogger, [...]

CALGARY: Foothills hospital food

I’ve never bought the argument that food is simply sustenance. I’ve always found enjoyment, and yes, even joy in what food — and its accompanying experiences — brings.

But this week found me at the Foothills Medical Centre where food was the last of my concerns compared to the matter at hand. The reason [...]

CALGARY: Baguette showdown

After a waffle breakfast, I had to grab something to go for lunch and somehow Gwendolyn (she’s an enabler) convinced me to get two baguettes for “research.”

Ever the enablee, I chose a baguette with chicken ($8) from Manuel Latruwe, and a Perigord baguette ($10) with duck rillettes from L’Epicerie right next door.

The Latruwe baguette [...]

CALGARY: Crave ice cream sandwiches

Cupcakes melt fast when it’s hot out. So I was curious to try Crave’s new ice cream sandwiches

They’re made to order using Crave’s fresh-baked double chocolate or chocolate chunk cookies, and homemade vanilla bean ice cream. I got one of both (for the sake of research).

It’s sort of a “can’t lose” purchase. Ice [...]

TURNER VALLEY: Chuckwagon Cafe

One of the prettiest drives on a sunny day is part of the Cowboy Trail between Calgary and Turner Valley/Black Diamond. It’s an even worthier trip when the end goal is the declared winner of the “search for the perfect burger.”

Last summer, Gwendolyn and her sister — for the sake of research of course [...]

CALGARY: Sunterra Market

Condo dwellers of the Victoria Park area can now rejoice with their very own supermarket. Granted, it’s not a discount grocer, but the Sunterra Market (in the shiny Keynote tower) has its advantages especially for young professionals who live and work in the area.

As Calgary’s closest answer to Whole Foods, Sunterra Market stocks organic [...]

CALGARY: The Bistro at Art Central brunch

Lineups are the bane of weekend brunchers in Calgary. It’s always a pleasant surprise when you don’t have to stand in line for at least 15 minutes, perhaps cupping a precious cup of coffee while craning your neck to see how far down your name is on the waiting list.

The Bistro at Art Central [...]

CALGARY: BottleHouse pub

So once again, a restaurant occupies the doomed corner of Memorial Drive and 10th Avenue NW, where other eateries have tried and failed. This time though, I hope the BottleHouse Beer Parlour — despite the cheesy name and font — gets a chance.

First of all, the space is huge, so there’s no cramming elbow to [...]
