I’ve said it once, I’ve said it twice, and I’ll say it again. Chinese desserts are gross.

They’re usually made of BEANS, and are overly disgustingly sweet. But I’ve never seen something like this before.

Weird Chinese lollipop

It was included as a freebie dessert with a lunch combo at Pearl Castle Cafe. We go to the Taiwanese place for lunch regularly, and dessert is usually a cute little Jello cup. I have no idea what possessed them to switch to this.

At first glance, it looks like an alien brain is embedded in the lollipop. H’s reaction was, “What is that? Chicken?!”

No, not an alien and not chicken. It’s a salty dried plum (話梅 wah mui), the snack of choice in Chinese mom purses everywhere. (Well, that and dried shredded squid.)

An acquired taste at best, it is incomprehensible how anyone would have the eureka idea to create a lollipop out of it.

Even H, who loves lollipops, put it down in disgust after a few licks.
