Daddy’s Delight Pizza is one of these places that I naturally gravitate towards.
Weird name, check.
Grungy strip mall, check.
Menu littered with typos, check.
Doesn’t actually specialize in what it says on the sign, check.
Because I KNOW the food has to be good for a place like that to rise above all those drawbacks.
Pizza isn’t Daddy’s specialty — delicious Persian kebabs are.
The sizzling sounds and scrumptious smells of the skewers cooking on the open grill hit me as soon as I walked into the tidy restaurant. Most people were waiting for takeout, while there was one table of women eating with their kids.
It took about 15 minutes for my takeout order, but the owner reminded me I could call ahead next time. (He doesn’t know I have two kids at home, and enjoy playing on my phone while I wait for takeout.)
Jason ordered the cholo kebab ($9.99) and added an extra skewer ($3.50) for T. Ground beef is mixed with spices, onions, and garlic, and then shaped around metal skewers to grill.
I got the cholo kebab vaziri ($12.50), with one skewer of ground beef, and one chicken.
Normally, I stick to beef, as often chicken skewers end up very dry. But here, the yogurt-marinated chicken was soooo moist and full of lemony flavour.
The meals come with fluffy saffron rice, a grilled tomato, and shirazi salad (tomato, cucumber, onion with a very light dressing of olive oil, lemon and mint).
Both meals came with a thick yogurt sauce that I could have eaten on its own with a spoon. Me classy.
Oh, and the dusting of redness over the food is sumac, a slightly tart spice made from dried, ground berries.
There are enough tables and space in the casual restaurant for it to be kid-friendly. Or you can get takeout and plonk the kids down for a picnic at King George Park which is just steps away.
