There’s finally a bakery in Kensington again, yay! Malicher is located next to Nellie’s. There’s a handwritten sandwich board on Kensington Road advertising lunch specials and baked goods.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was a stack of what looked like flat, long donuts. It turned out to be langos, a Hungarian fried garlic bread. The woman behind the counter gave me a sample to try. I quite liked it but didn’t need any fried bread.

Malicher bakery, CalgaryThere are big rounds of rye and other breads for about $6 on one wall, and then a case of pastries on one side and croissants on the other.

The croissants were strangely already packaged in clear plastic containers in pairs and priced at $3.50 each. What if you want just one?

The two almond chocolate croissants I got were nice-sized. They’re more dense than flaky.

I can’t say how the Irish coconut cupcake ($2.50) tasted because I gave it away. I’m not sure if it was only Irish because it was the day after St. Patrick’s Day and had a shamrock toothpick in it. But my neighbour said the cupcake was tasty and heavier than the ones at Crave.

I didn’t see any lunch items out but there are sandwiches available. It’s soooo nice to see a bakery in the neighbourhood.
