As someone who saves her intake of KFC for special occasions, I was both horrified and intrigued by the Colonel’s Double Down.
The monstrosity — two pieces of boneless fried chicken breasts, two pieces of bacon, two slices of melted Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and the “colonel’s sauce” — was available for the first time in Canada today ($6.99) for a limited time. And of course I had to try it. For research.
Because I was juggling the baby, Jason was tasked with getting the sandwich home to me. He specifically asked me to mention that he dutifully did so after waiting in line for an hour to vote, and then another half hour in line at KFC.
So how is it? Salty. Very very salty. And not healthy.
The double down rings in at 540 calories, 32 g of fat and 1,740 mg of sodium, according to a KFC news release. The average adult’s daily salt intake should about 1,500 mg. There’s apparently a grilled version you can order instead for a slightly “healthier” nutritional count.
To be honest, it wasn’t as disgusting as I expected. The breading was crisp and uh, salty, while the chicken itself was actually moist. The closest way I can describe the mystery sauce is like a Thousand Island dressing with mustard? The texture of the bacon and processed cheese were there, but their “flavours” were overpowered by the sauce.
“I didn’t miss the bun,” said Jason.
More than 10 million Double Downs were sold in the U.S. in less than a month. I’m not sure how many Canadians are going to try it here.
The Double Down is available in Canada until Nov. 14.
Derek and I took a down a couple double downs tonight too. But I fear they will have the last laugh. Need water stat!
In terms of calories most of the burgers at fast food places have a higher count than the doubledown.
It’s practically diet food! ok, not really. Glad you were brave enough to try it so that I could read about it
This crapwich won’t last long… unless they reduce the salt drastically. Why did they make it that salty to begin with? I don’t get it.
I am scared to admit this, but I think it actually looks kind of good. But I am too scared to try it.
What is with all the salt?
That’s a heart attack waiting to happen. Yikes! =)
It’s KFC fried chicken (salty breading), bacon (always salty) and cheese (salted). No surprise it’s salty!
Unless you already have high blood pressure, eating this much salt won’t hurt you. It might be hard to eat, but it won’t hurt you.
Thank you for your ‘research’ I appreciate your honesty….
but I still don’t think I can walk through the door to KFC….
