My biggest fears about vegetarian food is that it will be bland and I’ll still be starving afterward. But the three-course vegetarian dinner ($19) at Higher Ground totally dispelled that.

The licensed coffee house offers Global Vegetarian Night every Wednesday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Each month’s menus are posted on their Facebook page. Reservations are highly recommended.

On a recent night, we started with refreshing salad rolls filled with spaghetti squash, red pepper, tempeh — a soybean cake with a firm texture that reminded me of chicken — and coriander. A cup of yummy hoisin-cucumber dipping sauce came on the side.

Two skewers of tofu and grilled vegetables with lemon jasmine rice and a very tasty satay sauce served as the main course.

A sweet ending of quinoa apple crumble was extremely filling. The apples had been baked to that perfect in-between of just soft enough with a crunchy edge. Admittedly, I was craving some vanilla ice cream to go with the vegan dessert, but it was very good without.

At $19, this is a terrific deal and a healthy break from meat. (I can’t believe I just said that.)
