With Calgary now thawing out, it’s a good time to try the frozen yogurt at Spoon Me in Kensington.
The concept is simple. Choose from three base yogurt flavours of natural (like vanilla), green tea, or acai (a slightly tart berry flavour) and then from any of their 26 toppings. There’s a nice selection of fresh fruit, sprinkles, chocolate and lots of cereal. Yay!
I had a baby cup (which is pretty big) for $5 with three toppings: mango, strawberries and Frosted Flakes.
The yogurt was very cold and tasty, and not processed, which makes me believe Spoon Me’s claim that its yogurt contains no table sugar or artificial sweeteners, colours or flavouring.
Jason said he had never had frozen yogurt that actually tasted like yogurt like this, assuming that frozen yogurt was supposed to taste like ice cream.
The interior is cheerful, retro modern with ample seating. I love Spoon Me’s cheeky napkins and merchandise that ask “Wanna spoon me?”
Spoon Me is a franchise that began in Salt Lake City and now has about a dozen spots in Utah, Arizona and Idaho. The Calgary location, which opened in November, is its first Canadian franchise.
Its guiding principles are good for your body and good for the environment, with spoons made of corn starch, and their cups, straws and napkins 100 per cent biodegradable in three months.
Spoon Me, 100-1130 Kensington Rd. NW, Calgary, (403) 453-2101. Open Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight.

There environment actions are funny.
I went there and was impressed with it at first. But I took a spoon home and guess what the spoons are worst in degrading then plastic. ONLY if you bring the spoons back to a special factory that burns them at high heat they will degrade but as not as Spoon Me does it by just trowing them out in the garbage (i asked)
For me the food is great but the environment is still a victim here
I can see stopping by here when I’m at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Farmers Market this summer. I love that they’re using biodegradables. I wish that kind of stuff was more widely available in grocery/dept stores. I’ve stocked up on dishes & cutlery so we don’t use paper plates & cups etc when we entertain anymore…now if I could only hire someone to do all the dishes after a party
Second location has been opened in Calgary! Located on 6th Street SW off of 17th Ave…few steps from Fiore’s.
