The tiny Thai restaurant is in the same Kensington courtyard that usually spills over with customers from the Roasterie. You know where I’m talking about.
Delicious Thai’s exterior is a marked contrast to the pretty oasis of cozy tables inside. The restaurant’s soft-spoken servers are beyond gracious, bowing deeply to welcome every new visitor.
For some reason, we’ve only ever ordered takeout, but every time we go pick up our order, I can’t figure out why we don’t just stay. (Well, other than we look kind of grubby and really should just go home.)
I insist on getting the deep-fried chicken wings ($10) stuffed with ground pork and shrimp, carrots, and mushrooms. It comes with a sweet dipping sauce. It’s my non-negotiable part of our rotation.
The special roasted red duck curry ($14.70) shows off the Thai fundamentals of spicy, sour, sweet and salty. Cooked in coconut milk, the curry is chock full of duck meat, red and green peppers, snow peas, bamboo shoots, and lychee for a burst of flavours and textures.
The pad horappa ($11.50) or simply a stir fry with Thai basil leaves is a good contrast to the creamy or spicy dishes. We got the beef one, which is mixed in with red and green peppers, onions, mushrooms, garlic and chili.
Most of the time, Jason is partial to the richer Panang curry with pork ($10.60), but really they’re all good.
We tried to stray from pad thai and ordered the pad kheemow ($11.30), or spicy fried noodles with basil. It was OK, but reminded me of Chinese rice noodles. Really, we should know better and stick with the pad thai. I know more than a few people who swear by the version here.
After so much plentiful, cheap Thai food in Toronto, I’m glad there’s finally a reasonably priced Thai restaurant here in Calgary with amazing food. It’s a little place you’ll want to come back to time and again.
(Here’s a bit of trivia: the chef at Delicious Thai has a masters degree in business administration!)
