Yorkie: It’s not for girls

Saint John City Market

The Saint John City Market is a wonderful place to stroll on a leisurely weekend. I’d probably be there a lot if I lived in the city.

Among the seafood, fresh fruit, and deli offerings is a small corner of British exports, which belongs to Pete’s Frootique.

There, I was enchanted by a chocolate bar, boldly branded as “Yorkie It’s not for girls!” with a female stick figure crossed out.

Why is it not for girls? Is it going to give me a tummy ache? Will it shrink my ovaries?

Thanks to Wikipedia, it looks like the whole “not for girls” thing is a marketing ploy for the bar created in 1976 and now owned by NestlĂ©. I’m still not sure how that tagline sells more chocolate.

Anyway, Yorkie is really just a glorified Cadbury Dairy Milk. The chunkier bar has raisins and bit of biscuit in it. It was OK, but I prefer my Fruit and Nut.

  • That market is the first place I ever saw fiddleheads many years ago, and I ate some for the first time that night!

Do they still have piles of dulse for sale too?

In May, 2008 I had the opportunity to spend a morning at the Boyce Market in Fredericton and I found this market to be quite a bit of fun, alive and had some unique items for sale. I didn’t find this to be the case at the Saint John City Market (August 2009) and came away thinking that I would not be rushing back to this market. It might have been due to the fact that I had this image of the Saint John Market being way better and way bigger and way more interesting than Boyce Market. It wasn’t. Just my two cents.

Really enjoy your photographs of food. Will be in Calgary on the Thanksgiving weekend and you have given me so many ideas of places to eat I’m already near a catatonic state trying to decide on which restaurant I want to try first!

The thing about the Boyce market in Fredericton is that it is ONLY open once a week in the mornings, whereas the SJ city market is open 6 days a week. So of course the Fredericton market will be more bustling because the entire city has only one day a week to get there! Overall I prefer the offerings in the SJ market and I love sitting and watching all the people at the Java Moose.
