Calgary tidbits & pineapple upside-down cake

  • A soon-to-be opening place called loungeburger has been drumming up buzz on Twitter. It just tweeted about a party tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 29) between noon and 4 p.m. in the lobby of Stampede Station at 13th Avenue and Macleod Trail S.W.

I would hope they’re serving burgers!

Some other Calgary restaurants on twitter: @EnjoyDistrict, @CHARCUT, @milktigerlounge, @KawaCalgary, @LatinSweetsCafe, @OSullivansYYC.

  • Patti tipped me off to a harvest sale at Heritage Park over the weekend (Saturday & Sunday) where you can get fresh fruit and vegetables at “turn of the century prices.”

Hosted by the Calgary Produce Marketing Association, proceeds go to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, Heritage Park Society and the Calgary Community Kitchen.

  • And for fun, rate your food threshold. Needless to say, I’m a 20. (And even though insects stymied me once, I swear I’m going to try them next time I get a chance.)

PC Pineapple upside down cakes

This falls under the “Wow, it actually looks like what’s on the box!” category.

Jason bought this at the Superstore primarily because of the housewife and the ’50s font on the box. Plus we needed dessert and I am not a housewife from the ’50s who turn outs perfect pineapple upside-down cakes.

Made by President’s Choice, these moist and spongey cakes — with pineapple slices and topped with caramel sauce — were amazing. Four individual mini-cakes come in a box. I can’t remember how much it was, but couldn’t have been more than $5.99.

I hate to admit it, but sometimes good things come out of a box.

  • Does that mean you’ve tried or would easily try 17-20 on that list? My brain and heart can’t get past 15 on the list.

Cheryl: Except for brain/heart, I’ve tried 17-19. Insects is what got in my way from making it straight through. I would try brain/heart if it was legitimately part of a culture’s diet where I was visiting, and not part of some gross-out test.

President’s Choice has a lot of good things- this doesn’t surprise me. However, I find it hard to convince hubby to go there- the ones near us are enormous, chaotic and rely heavily on self-serve checkout.
There is a new one at Whitemud and 17th that supposedly has a huge emphasis on ethnic food- the article in the Edmonton Journal says they offer every ethnic food that Loblaw’s carries anywhere. I would like to convince him to go…
    I gotta get a driver’s license.

Dez: J and I have a routine to stay sane at the Superstore. If the produce section is nuts, he waits in a corner of the bakery while I navigate the crowd. If someone’s blocking the aisle, I’m the yeller. (ie, “EXCUSE ME!”) At checkout, he bags/boxes the way he wants to and I stay out of his way. It’s a good system. :-)

  • Hmm… I would probably stop at dog/cat but I have definitely tried bird’s nest soup and shark fin soup and enjoy them both. Clearly if a Chinese person had written this chart it would not look like that ;)

  • I must confess, I usually bake my cakes but i get it from a box. I am just not good at baking… i once tried to bake a carrot cake and i burnt it. Glad to see a cake that turned out okay, even though it did come from a box :)

The bread pudding that comes in a box under the President’s Choice brand is also delicious! It’s hard to find though, and I think they only put them out around Christmas Time. Even so, I had a hard time finding them around Christmas since they are usually gone so fast!
