I’ve wanted to try Japadog forever, but the timing or the locations were never quite right on my trips back to Vancouver. This time I was determined.
I was downtown around 11:30 a.m. but hadn’t eaten breakfast yet and didn’t relish the idea of a hot dog being my first meal of the day. So I stopped at my friend Greg’s new place to eat some of his homemade pannekoek before we went for some Japadog.
A short walk away was Japadog’s newest location outside the Coal Harbour Community Centre, right on the water. The lineup was definitely shorter than at the two downtown locations I’ve seen, and by far the most picturesque setting.
Japadogs are essentially smokies with Japanese toppings, and they have a loyal following.
I made a beeline for the spicy cheese terimayo ($6.25) because it featured my favourite smokie of all time, a jalapeno and cheese-stuffed dog. Sweet Japanese mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce was then topped with fried onions and seaweed.
Definitely not your traditional hot dog, but I really enjoyed it.
You know who else is a fan? Ice Cube. Cuz he sez so:
Next time, I’d like to try the Oroshi: a bratwurst laden with special soy sauce, green onions, and daikon.
The Coal Harbour location has a bit of a bigger menu than the two downtown stands, probably because it can take advantage of an interior kitchen at the community centre. I saw signs for steamed potatoes with Japanese toppings, as well as ice cream in Japanese flavours.
The staff are ridiculously chipper, even in +30 degree heat. Plus I love hearing them announce each dog out loud with a Japanese accent.
Japadog, 3 locations in Vancouver: Burrard and Smithe, Burrard and Pender, Coal Harbour Community Centre. Check website for hours.

At their other locations, they offer a few more choices.
My favorites include Terimayo, Miso Mayo, Oroshi & Okonomi.
Soo yummy!! =)
jealous! I want to try it in September!
for a second, I thought the mayo drizzle on the hot dog photo was a ramen noodle…
Glad you were able to finally get your Japadog fix on your recent visit to the coast.
I’d heard about this latest location and it does look picturesque! With the greater number of benches and grass to sit on, probably makes eating more enjoyable as well compared to the other locations. Oroshi is unique, I think I liked the regular Terimayo the best so far though.
Oooo…I’ll be staying down near Burrard St in Sept and have seen great reviews about this, this is going on my list of places to try for sure
Just came from a visit from seattle. Saw the long line and thought why not give it a try. The terimayo was fantastic but i don’t think it had any cheese on it.
