• Alberta Pork is sponsoring two free lunches of pulled pork sandwiches to drum up support for the industry, amid misconceptions about the swine flu.

The Edmonton event, at the Alberta legislature today (Tuesday, May 12) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will include speeches from politicians. The Calgary event at the McDougall Centre is on Wednesday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Yup, speeches there too.

  • On Wednesday, May 13, between 4-6 p.m., watch for people dressed up as butchers in a “high-traffic location” in Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. They’ll be giving away coupons to promote new meat products from President’s Choice, which is sold at Superstore and Loblaws.

“PC Tender and Tasty beef is cut from Canada AAA or USDA Choice grade beef,” said a news release. “PC Free From beef, chicken and pork products are specially selected and raised without the use of antibiotics. Loblaw is also increasing the amount of meat it is sourcing from Canadian producers.”

  • Toronto’s Caplansky’s, recently praised by none other than Gourmet magazine editor Ruth Reichl, has signed a lease on a new location at 356 College St. (at Brunswick). Target opening date is July, but the owner hasn’t decided what to do with the current setup in the Monarch Tavern.

  • I’ve been trying to update old posts with information on restaurants that have since closed, or moved, or changed management. So if you spot anything that’s out of date, please let me know.

  • And finally, I’ve realized that I am Liz Lemon from 30 Rock. Because I eat like her, and sadly, dance like her too.

(This is Liz Lemon trying to reconcile with an ex at the airport. However, her and her sub are stopped at airport security. Liz must choose between the sandwich and her man! The horror! Ever the smart gal, she screams “I can have it all!” and crams the sub into her mouth before running through security. Yeah! You go, girl!)
