The weather is nice enough now for some leisurely weekend drives. Check out the Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch, southwest of Calgary, that provides hormone and antibiotic-free elk and bison to the three resorts and four Calgary restaurants, including Divino, owned by the same company.
You can buy the same meats yourself at their on-ranch store, which opens for the season May 1 every Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. This year, they’re also selling pre-made elk and buffalo dishes. Click for a map to the ranch here.
Another great excuse for a drive out of town, the annual Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival is fast approaching. It’s being held May 2 at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Where else can you do tastings in such beautiful surroundings?
We can make sandwiches is a Calgary blog … about makin’ sandwiches. I don’t think it will get as controversial as the Scanwich war in New York City though.
Daybreak Alberta, the CBC Alberta morning show on the weekends, needed to fill some airtime, so they grabbed me for a quick interview on this blog and eating in general. It airs Sunday at 7:15 a.m. on CBC Radio One but you can also listen to it here on RealPlayer. I hope I don’t come across as a boob.
I really hope saying farewell to the guys at Eat.Sleep..Dream…Food will only mean saying hello to them again somewhere down the road.
And finally, nothing to do with food, but everything to do with the power of photography and a simple narrative. You won’t be able to take your eyes off Days with My Father, a moving photo essay by Phillip Toledano.

Foodosophy!!!!! noooooo. I love your random things!
And I doubt you’ll sound like a “boob” – no way!
We picked up a family pack of bison from CRMR and love it!
I’ll have to take the kids down there one of these days…when we ordered we just picked it up at Cilantro. I’ve invested in a good pair of wellies and a map and u-picks/farms gate sales etc are on the day trip staycation plans for the summer
Andrea, you were charming on Daybreak. I hadn’t made the connection between radio Andrea and ugonnaeatthat, which btw is a great blog! Your pictures alone are wonderful, and I agree with you: bugs on a stick would be something I’d pass on too.
Cheers,
jill
Aw shucks, Jill. You are too kind! Thank you!
Wow thanks for the review. That Scanwich site is a great. We have some major plans for wecanmakesandwiches. Shortly we’ll have a recipe section with high end and low end items.
Love, love, love Rocky Mountain Ranch, they have incredible meats. Try them all, you will cry when you have anything else. We buy huge orders everything from the breakfast sausages to roasts. Kids love the Salami.
Go to Chinook Honey just outside Okotoks. They have wonderful honey and mead products. I am totally and completely addicted to the Bodacious Black Currant and Ginger Snapped Honey Wine.
They are also part of the Flavours of the Foothills so is Rocky Mountain ranch. http://www.chinookhoney.com/harvestfestival.html
Wonderful time.
Have you tried http://www.thebestofneworleans.ca/ suppose to be fantastic…haven’t been there myself yet.
Krista: Thanks for the recommendation for the Cajun restaurant. I’ll add it to my list of places to try. I’ve written about Chinook Honey before: http://ugonnaeatthat.com/2008/07/28/all-abuzz-about-mead/, which reminds me almost time to get more mead.
