The McLobster

McLobster

OK, OK, we finally tried it. We saw a big sign under the golden arches and couldn’t resist.

The McLobster is McDonald’s take on the venerable lobster roll, available only in the Maritimes and Maine. If I recall correctly, the chain was charging about $10 for the combo meal with fries and a drink. Most roadside places charge about $10 to $12 for a big lobster roll.

My expectations were hardly high so I was surprised by how many real chunks of lobster were in the standard white-bread hot-dog roll. It was cold and crispy with shredded lettuce and bits of celery, but the McLobster was strangely devoid of any taste.

I’m guessing the lobster meat — already delicate in flavour — had been frozen, which may explain why the McLobster was so bland.

It wasn’t the worst lobster roll I’ve ever had, but it was hardly the best.

However, there is some consolation that its French name, McHomard, makes me giggle every time I see it.
