Every time I visit Fredericton, I’m pleasantly surprised by how much the city is changing and how many more new restaurants have opened.
Downtown Fredericton now has an Indian-Pakistani restaurant, a Vietnamese noodle house, a Caribbean place, and a Korean-Japanese eatery called Bulgogi.
Deb says in addition to the steadily growing Chinese student population, there’s now a burgeoning Korean community in Fredericton.
Bulgogi is a casual place, geared more towards take out or a quick meal. Everything is set up like a fast-food counter with a big overhead menu and prepared food you can see behind the glass counter.
I got the special combo ($9.99) which was waay too much food. It gives you three choices with rice and cellophane noodles, and three pieces of maki sushi. I got the spicy pork (good) with dumplings (a little too cool) and bean sprouts (yum).
Bulgogi is still working things out: Jason ordered after I did — and was told they had run out of rice (it was about 1:30 p.m.). They gave him extra noodles instead. The staff is obviously trying hard, and were very nice.
The Korean food and sushi wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but to just have a decent option like this in Fredericton is a good thing.
And if you need groceries …
The Friendship Convenience Store, a crowded corner grocery, used to be the only place you had any hope of finding Asian ingredients. But now there’s Saigon Asian Grocery, a full-fledged supermarket — unfortunately tucked away in the industrial park, but it’s not that far of a drive.
The first floor is packed with stuff — furniture, clocks, purses and watches. But the lower floor is a cook’s heaven — and if you’ve ever tried to find preserved duck eggs in New Brunswick, you know what I mean.
The shelves are lined with all sorts of sauces, vinegars and noodles and the freezers filled with dumplings, won ton wrappers, and lemongrass.
The cashier lady (and owner no doubt), who I heard speaking Vietnamese earlier, asked me something in Mandarin as I was paying for our Pocky, but when I told her I could only speak Cantonese, she switched! Now, that’s skillz!

Hi, I randomly stumbled over your blog a few months ago. I have been to a few places you have been to and it is really neat to read what other people think about the food.
Currently I actually live in Fredericton and was really looking forward to Bulgogi opening, but I was quite disappointed by the Sushi. Everything seems really fresh, but with the mayonaise in the rice and the rainbow roll containing processed cheese and turkey all their sushi tastes more like a typical north american sandwich…
cheers,
Jonas
Is it good?
it doesn’t look like korean food?
That Bulgogi place is soooooo good omg lol Me and my friends randomly went there, and ordered something we didn’t know lol
Loved the Bulgogi place, certainly beats the sushi you buy at Superstore! Portions are huge, so consider bringing a friend and sharing…
Thank You! I’m a Korean dude from Vancouver, living in Gagetown just 15 minutes away. I came here for army work and I stayed 2 weeks now. For some reason, I wanted to have kimchi bowl noodle, which got me thinking Korean food few days ago.
Now I know where to go, so I thank you very much!
I just ate there and while it wasn’t that bad, I probably won’t return there. I’m quite certain that the vegetables that I had were of the frozen variety. The spicy pork was so-so and the chicken was basically breaded chicken with sauce. It really didn’t look as good as the photos that you posted a year ago. Nothing special.
you have no idea how happy i am finding this blog. my boyfriend lives in oromocto and i’m from toronto. being filipino i love cooking asian food but can’t seem to find the right ingredients due to their lack of selections at sobeys or supermarket. hopefully saigon has what i’m looking for when i return next month. thanks sooo much for this informantion! i’m also looking forward to finally having sushi in nb. siiigh, so hard finding asian food in the east, whethere good or bad.
jes: Yay, I’m so happy I could help! I know what you mean about craving Asian food (good or bad) in the Maritimes… Good luck!
Yes .. Thank you so much for posting the asian stores, I was having such a hard time adjusting to just sobeys and superstore. I’ve made trips back and forth to visit family in Toronto just to shop for food and bring it back to Fredericton … now I dont have to haul food back lol. As for the new sushi place food was adequate but will not return usually restaurants that are of a different culture always makes the food tastier than you .. but in this case no… I make my sushi and Bulgogi so much better and the portions like tereyaki salmon is a filet not bits. They still need to fix a few things like the quality of food being served.
