I wanted to kick off day one of a short (about 3.5 days) visit to San Francisco with a nice coffee. Well, wouldn’t you know that every corner within six blocks of our Financial District hotel was a Starbucks. Bleah. So I kept walking.
There were a few Peet’s locations, which appears to be a local chain. But they didn’t look like super comfortable places to stay and sip, and the lineups (mostly business people in suits) were long.
Then I turned a corner near the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and found Caffe Trieste with a few tables and chairs outside, and some nice seating inside.
As I waited for my cappuccino, I noticed several framed and autographed photos of Bill Cosby on the walls. I guessed the Coz enjoyed the coffee, but I later found out through google that he’s a fan of Caffe Trieste’s long-standing Saturday afternoon concerts begun by performing members of the family that owns the cafe.
The location I visited featured art from students at the nearby Academy of Art University. I really liked the spirit of Caffe Trieste and the cappuccino was pretty good too.

but did you find Tartine?! best bakery ever!!!
I did!… But I was really full at the time and had no room to try anything! It’s definitely on my list when I go back to SF next time.
The next time you go to San Francisco, you must check out Blue Bottle Coffee, south of Market Street. Even Chez Panisse uses their beans.
