Christina’s mom made a gigantic vassilopita or Greek New Year’s bread as part of a fabulous dinner we were lucky enough to be invited to at their home.
The person who finds a coin wrapped and hidden in the bread gets good fortune all year. The tradition in the Frangou house is for everyone to pick a slice based on age, from youngest to oldest. To prevent spoiling the surprise, Chris’ mom got everyone to mark their choice with a labelled toothpick.
I didn’t find the coin, but the bread was still good. It was on the sweet side, slightly citrusy and very delicious.
I’m about nine days late but Happy New Year!

Neat tradition. I think we should start our own…hide a rolled up bill inside one of the racks of lamb or prime ribs.
