On our way out of Grande Prairie, a seven-hour drive back to Calgary, we had to make an unscheduled stop when Jason spotted H & M Meats — home of “the best beef jerky ever” he said.
We were hit by that cold, sterilized air as soon as we walked into the butcher’s. The industrial fridges were full of beautiful marbled ribeyes and bison steaks in vacuum packs. In one fridge are shelves of their beef, bison and pork jerky, wrapped in brown wax paper in one-pound packages ($22).
I unwrapped our beef jerky in the car and it was suddenly filled with the smoky aroma of dried meat. Not just any ole dried meat and not that nasty stuff you get from gas stations, but the best beef jerky ever.
It was peppery and salty and sooo good. No weird chemicals and no gnawing on a piece until my jaw hurt. I didn’t know that kind of jerky existed.

better than the chinese jerky at Richmond’s Aberdeen centre?
It’s totally different. The Chinese jerky is so sweet and sticky, while this is bone dry and very smoky and salty.
I think I prefer sweet and sticky. You’re more a dry and smoky and salty person.
