Pocari Sweat

Pocari Sweat

Thirsty? How about some Pocari Sweat? It’s an ION SUPPLY DRINK from Japan, available for $3.78 at your local Asian store.

More clarification from the label: “Pocari Sweat is a healthy beverage that smoothly supplies the lost water and electrolytes during perspiration. With the appropriate density and electrolytes, close to that of human body fluid, it can be easily absorbed into the body.”

I think that means it’s designed to be more of a sports energy drink. Though I’m not sure how helpful the first two ingredients of water and corn syrup can be.

Bottom line, it’s very flat and tastes faintly of lemon flavouring, like weak Fresca or bland Gatorade.

I’m a little disappointed Pocari Sweat is so unremarkable when it has such an unforgettable name.

Thousands of various electrolyte drinks, often in vending machines on the streets which sell other things (panties, condoms, hot coffee and once in a while food) 24 hours a day to various ‘businessmen’ on the street, are available over there.

China is trying to imitate it, but not the all-night vending.
Taiwan follows Japan in the use of such drinks during the hot season.

Pocari Sweat is always amusing to English readers, but a fine example of Japlish?

You might like ‘Calpis’ better if you can get over the opaque whiteness of the drink.

    Hello there.
I’m not sure if you remember me, but I used to comment here before….
this blog made me laugh. ha-ha-ha.
as grownn up in Japan, I always drunk pocari sweat, so I never really thought this was a funny thing. I always thought of it as just a product name, you know.
but it’s the first sport drink made in Japan and is really popular still.
I don’t know why but many people drink them when they are sick too.

anyways….. just wanted to say hi.

Pocari is a refreshing drink.. it has ions in it so would see some cloudy precipitate in the water.. its a mixture of water and ions thou… at first i dont like the taste.. but i get used to it after a while.

  • I found Pocari Sweat in Hong Kong and had to take a picture of course. However I was not so brave as you to actually ingest it. For me coconut water is the best electrolyte replacer, plus it makes me feel like I’m on a beach.
    love the blog!

This is my childhood drink and I love it :) It’s not supposed to be sugary like soda because in that case just drink some Sprite.
