SARNIA: Ralph’s favourite fries

Albert's Chip Truck, Sarnia

Albert's Chip Truck, SarniaDear Ralph,

Thank you for inviting us to your beautiful wedding in Sarnia, Ontario. I didn’t know anything about your hometown except that lots of trucks and RVs drive through it to cross the Canada-U.S. border, so your insider tips were very helpful.

You advised us to head for the chip trucks “under the bridge” and that there, we would find the world’s best French fries.

So we drove toward the only bridge we could see – later I found out it’s the Blue Water Bridge – and easily found two chip trucks with their own special parking spots. Both had huge lineups so we picked Albert’s Rolling Lunch because we liked the name and it said it’s been around since 1957.

Albert’s offers other goodies like hamburgers and pogos but we stayed simple and got a box of fries for $4.50. From a picnic table, we took in the cool breeze and the stunning blue water of Lake Huron. I can see why this is one of your favourite spots in Sarnia.

Albert's Chip Truck, SarniaAs we watched the organized chaos between the long lineup to order and the gaggle of people to the left waiting for their orders, we noticed a handy little contraption. A vinegar hose hanging inside the pickup window to spray vinegar over the fries. Brilliant!

The fries were great. Hot, crispy and salty. And they disappeared fast. I don’t know if I’d call them the world’s best fries but since you’re family now, Ralph, I’ll say they came pretty darn close.

Sincerely,
Your new cousin-in-law

PS: I hope you’re enjoying your honeymoon, and not on your Mac surfing the Internet.

some days in the summer there are up to 5 “chip” trucks to be found “under the bridge” it is a family “thing” and people continue for generations to visit. it is located in “Point Edward”. Point Edward is a Village “within” a city. And Yes I have been everywhere Sarnia has the best fries !;)

Sadly Albert’s is done… I’m not sure what happened, but they are done :( They live around the corner from me and the truck has been stripped :( Quite sad.

They were outbid. The parking place was up for tender, and they did not place a high enough bid. I think it was more than $50000 for the year. Besides, it was the atmosphere, not the fries (the greasiest fries I have ever had, and it’s beef tallo)

Not so sad, this was a case of lemonade from lemons. Alberts bought the ice cream store just under the bridge and are now open year round. The quality of the chips is now more consistent AND you don’t have to wait out in the cold or rain and can sit down inside this small restaurant to enjoy the chips.

Thanks everyone for the info. Garry, I hope they continue to do well at their new location.

Dave, they switched to Beef Tallow, after many years of using peanut oil. With so many allergies, they couldn’t risk it anymore, they were probably losing business (My daughter is allergic to nuts). I think it was a temporary thing though. They probably use Sunflower or Canola oil now.

Funny coincidence. I was there today (March 1), and the cold wind was blowing and snow was falling. The new guy was open. I don’t think he had much business because nobody got out of their cars.

In my humble opinion … and I have done much research and sampling; In
all the Sarnia locations, the art seems to have been lost for great fries. Such a shame for as a child, going for fries at the only wagon under the bridge was a special treat.
The main problem is consistency with most but some are consistently bad because I personally do not like greasy, sloppy, or even crispy without flavor! If I want that… I can go to MC——- or any other fast food outlet. Of course , this is only my opinion and maybe people like greasy sloppy dripping with canola oil cooked pieces of potato now days?

People shouldn’t write things that they don’t know the
facts about! Alberts was not overbid nor do they or have they ever
used Beef Tallo, Canola Oil or Peanut Oil! Cheers, have a great
    day!

Can anyone tell me the names of the chips trucks under the bridge and when they usually open for the season?
