Deep-fried things taste good. Even better when the deep-frying is done by professionals. The owner of Brits Fish and Chips calls himself a “fish fryer from the U.K.” After years of running fish and chip shops in Scotland and England, he and his Canadian wife settled in Edmonton. Lucky for me.

The fish (from cod to turbot to halibut) at Brits is fresh and yummy. The chips are delish. And the onion rings are to die for. Signs proudly declare no trans fats or MSG are used here.

Portions are gigantic and prices are reasonable. The “family special” features 8 huge pieces of fish, fries, onion rings and 4 sides. Four of us couldn’t finish it.

Brits boasts of homemade recipes, including the batters, tartar sauce and mushy peas. You can get sweet curry sauce, which I drown my fries in.

marsbarThe best part is Brits offers the Scottish delicacy known as the deep-fried Mars bars. You gotta try it at least once. It’s strangely good.

Brits is a simple place. Come through the front door painted like a British phone booth, order and pay at the counter, grab a table and your baskets will be delivered to your table.

Lots of people also come for take-out, so beware long waits on Friday nights and weekends. But I’d rather wait for fresh fish and chips than slog through a soggy basket of mush.
