Everyday SUSHI

Ho Su, Toronto

I used to eat so much sushi when I was about 6 that the doctor told my parents to stop feeding it to me because it was doing strange things to my digestive system. That didn’t last long since I was one bratty kid.

There are the really exceptional but really expensive sushi places. But I’m partial to the ole standbys, where you don’t need reservations but you also don’t have to worry about the final bill or food poisoning.

Toronto’s Ho Su has some creative twists on sushi. I devoured the Rainbow Sushi which was a long row of California rolls (avocado and crab), topped with different coloured sashimi and a sprinkling of roe. Hence the rainbow.

I also got the spicy tuna roll which they roll with some crunchy tempura crisps. Genius. The bonus at Ho Su is it also has a great Korean menu.

Vancouver’s big craze for the last decade has been all you can eat sushi. But I was astonished at Tomokazu’s all you can eat lunch for $9.95. Basically everything you can get at dinner ($21.95) but you stuff your face at noon.

We went to town on sushi, sashimi, tempura, udon noodles, teriyaki, gyoza, baked oysters, miso soup, katsu, zaru soba… then my dad got jello for dessert.

I’m starting to feel like a show-off. Sorry.

Susan the owner said I was their best customer. I like their spicy deep fried chicken. They’re like little deep fried chicken nuggets with this tangy spicy sauce that is just awesome!!!

I’m not a huge fan of their sushi as much as their Korean fare. I go to Sushi Inn for their Spicy Tuna and Sushi Pizza when I want a Sushi fix.

For everyday sushi in Calgary, I frequent Tokyo Garden on Southport Road. I have been going regularly for about 10 years now (a little less, now that I live in Okotoks). They are not fancy like Globefish, with all of their creative rolls, but the quality has always been top notch, and service is always great. Again, nothing extravagant, but great “everyday” sushi.
